Description

HBA controller / pass-through mode

An HBA (Host Bus Adapter) is a controller that presents the drives directly to the operating system without a hardware RAID layer.

Software-defined storage such as VMware vSAN, Ceph, ZFS and Storage Spaces Direct needs direct access to the drives.

The storage software has full control over the drives, their health and data distribution, and one layer of complexity is removed.

This text is the general explanation of this category of part (not a claim about one specific model).
